Food Checker FAQ
How do I check if a food is safe for IBS?
Type the food name into the search box above. The checker returns its FODMAP grade (A low, B moderate, C high), whether it is a common IBS trigger, and the portion at which it becomes a problem. All 191 foods in the database are graded against published Monash University testing.
What do the A, B and C FODMAP grades mean?
Grade A foods are low FODMAP at a standard serving and can be eaten freely during elimination. Grade B foods are safe only in a limited portion, so the serving size is what matters. Grade C foods are high FODMAP and are the ones most likely to trigger symptoms, so they are removed during the elimination phase and tested later during reintroduction.
Does a high-FODMAP grade mean I can never eat that food?
No. A grade describes the odds across people with IBS, not your personal reaction. Most people tolerate several high-FODMAP groups perfectly well. The point of the elimination and reintroduction phases is to find which groups actually affect you, so you end up restricting far less than the full list.
Why does a food show as safe in one portion and a trigger in another?
FODMAPs are dose-dependent. Sugars like fructans and GOS only draw enough water into the gut, and ferment enough, to cause symptoms once you pass a threshold. That is why a quarter of an avocado is low FODMAP while a whole one is not, and why portion size appears on every food page.
Is the food checker free?
Yes. The checker and every food page on this site are free and need no account. The GutAI app adds photo-based meal scanning, symptom logging and AI pattern detection on top of the same FODMAP data.
